Pellionia pulchra ‘Watermelon’ is a fast growing, thick-stemmed vine from Asia. It has dark green veins on medium green leaves that are heavily veined and puckered. These attractive leaves are reminiscent in color to the Watermelon plant are about 1” wide and 2.5” long. The Pellionia pulchra ‘Watermelon’ is an easy to care for houseplant and looks great in a pot or hanging basket. It also does well in container gardens. It prefers bright, indirect light and moist (not wet) soil. It can tolerate light shade.

USDA Hardiness Zone 10-11

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant:

The Pellionia pulchra ‘Watermelon’ makes a great houseplant and looks terrific in a pot or hanging basket. The stems will cascade down over the pot or hanging basket it is planted in, and the foliage will get thick and full. It also does well in container gardens, fairy gardens and terrariums.

Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:

Pellionia pulchra ‘Watermelon’ is a vining plant, and should be planted towards the back of the vivarium, where it will climb up and over the background and hardscape. It can also be used as a foreground plant as the taller stems will eventually fall and creep across the substrate.

Pellionia pulchra ‘Watermelon’ has moderate water needs but does not like soggy substrate. This plant will grow in almost any lighting conditions, but grows best under bright light where it will grow in a more compact form with shingling leaves. Pellionia pulchra ‘Watermelon’ does not require air circulation to thrive in a naturalistic vivarium. Can be used as a 'filler' plant and will quickly fill in between larger plants, and covering up the background. Pellionia pulchra ‘Watermelon’ has stiff leaves that make great calling and egg laying sites for smaller forms of poison dart frogs

As good practice, we recommend washing all plants thoroughly removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home.  Plants are specifically grown to be safe for use with animals. Live plants may vary in color, size and appearance.

The plant pictured is in a 2.25” pot.
